The Association of Academic Surgical Administrators (AASA) seeks proposals for educational content to AASA members. This request for proposals (RFP) is issued by the Education Chair on behalf of AASA Board of Directors and Membership.
The AASA mission is to cultivate a thriving community of successful academic surgical leaders by inspiring members to contribute, learn and network. AASA members represent 103 Academic Medical Centers with a current membership at 290. Member roles include but are not limited to surgical department vice chair of administration and finance, section administrator, hospital leadership, ambulatory leadership, and leader in research/education. Based upon member feedback and strategic planning priorities the AASA Board of Directors have charged the Education Chair to identify and implement additional training opportunities to both further our mission and meet member needs.
AASA Annual Conference
Once a year, in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress, AASA holds a three-day educational conference designed to deliver educational content and networking opportunities to the organization’s membership. The AASA Annual Conference includes a variety of educational sessions, a pre-conference professional skill development course, a joint meeting with the Society of Surgical Chairs (SSC), presentation of posters highlighting research completed by members and sponsors, special interest forums, and numerous networking opportunities and social events for all attendees.
The AASA closed oral speaker submissions for the 31st AASA Annual Conference being held October 20-23, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. The theme of this year’s conference is Revolutionary Leadership. We are accepting Poster Abstract Submissions until August 13, 2018.
Criteria for Poster submission:
- Posters should include some of the components below.
- Results oriented- improves care, safety or process/efficiency
- Impact as evidenced by data from tests of change
- Practical to implement
- Creative and innovative
- Posters should be no smaller than 2’ x 3’ and no larger than 3’ x 5’
Poster Review Process:
This year, all attendees will be asked to vote on the posters during the Poster Session on Monday, October 22nd. After tallying the votes, the first, second and third place winners will be notified. The winners will have an opportunity to do a ten minute presentation about their posters on Tuesday, October 23rd. Anyone submitting a poster must be present at the Annual Conference on Tuesday, October 23rd and should be prepared to give a brief presentation.
AASA Midyear Retreats
Twice a year AASA holds one- or two-day meetings designed to deliver educational content and networking opportunities to the organization’s membership. AASA Midyear Retreats are hosted by an AASA member institution or AASA member-affiliated academic institution in two of the four regions of the United States. – East, South, Midwest, and West. The AASA Midyear Retreats include a variety of educational sessions, professional development courses, and numerous networking opportunities and social events for all attendees.
AASA Webinar Series
AASA holds monthly web-based seminars designed to increase education content availability through a platform readily accessible to all members.
Cutting Edge Newsletter
AASA has a seasonal newsletter designed to disseminate useful educational content and organizational information to all members. The medium is very flexible, conducive to a variety of styles, sizes, and colors of text, graphics, charts, or images/photographs. Examples of content from previous issues include, but are not limited to, written columns from industry experts, administrative research summaries, and question and answer sessions with a person of interest. Communicated via email and available for any member to view at any time through the AASA website, the Cutting Edge is made available in mobile- and desktop-friendly formats for maximum accessibility.

Proposals focused on the aforementioned themes will be more strongly considered than those that do not.
The AASA Education Committee will review all submitted proposals. Each proposal will be reviewed carefully for the following:
- Clear statement of how the presentation will contribute to the overall learning objectives and content balance of the conference/meeting/series
- Well-defined, realistic learning objectives that can be met in the allocated time
- Content that is current, practical, and complete
- Presentation methodologies that are innovative and effective for adult learning
- Experience and knowledge of the presenter
Proposals for presentations at the AASA Annual Conference are due by the close of business on Friday, May 4, 2018. Proposals received after this date and incomplete proposals will not be considered. AASA will acknowledge receipt of submitted proposals via email. Speakers that are selected for the 31st AASA Annual Conference will be notified no later than June 15, 2018.
Poster abstract submissions for the AASA Annual Conference will be accepted between June 13th and August 1st, 2018. New this year- abstracts will be submitted electronically as outlined below.
Proposals for presentations at the AASA Midyear Retreats are no longer being accepted. Presentations that are selected for the AASA Midyear Retreats will be notified no later than one month prior to Midyear Retreat date.
Proposals for AASA Webinar presentations and Cutting Edge Articles are accepted year-round. AASA will acknowledge receipt of submitted proposals via email.
Proposals received after deadlines, where applicable, and incomplete proposals may not be considered.
